Cleopatra And Mark Anthony

August 12, 2011 at 17:34 (Uncategorized)

Some of you might just know Mark Anthony as ‘J.Lo’s husband’, but other might know more: it’s Cleopatra’s lover. Plus: the other one is written with a ‘k’. Today, August 12th, it’s exactly 2041 years ago that they both died.

If you’re not interested at all, then don’t read further.

How they died is quite tragic. There was something going on in Egypt, namely a war (I don’t know much about that war, so I’m not going to say any more about it). When the already married couple Cleopatra and Mark Anthony lost the Battle of Actium (part of that war), Mark put all the blame on Cleopatra. That was not the smartest thing he’d ever done. Cleopatra feared for Antony’s rage and so she had herself locked up in a tomb that was built for her on her own demand. She sent her messengers to Mark to tell him that she was dead (which wasn’t true, of course). Unfortunately, Mark Anthony believed that she was dead and killed himself with a sword. Cleopatra tried some proposals to mediate with Octavianus (the one who won the Battle of Actium) to save her army. He rejected them. So Cleopatra was rather depressed. She committed suicide by letting a snake bit her. Before she did that, she tried out ‘good’ ways of committing suicide on servants and prisoners. Her final decision was the Egyptian cobra.
